Match report: Eire Og 1-6 v 0-13 Garryowen

Yesterday we made our first trip of the season to Greenford to play Garryowen in a Division 3 league game. With 17 of the panel unavailable we were tight for numbers but this was a great opportunity for some of the lads who have not had much game time in the previous games to make there point to Paul and Paddy.

The game got underway on time with a light breeze blowing across the pitch, we had a couple of early chances and missed the target. Garryowen made us pay for our missed chances and got a couple of uncontested points. Only for Keith Doherty in goal we would have been even further behind, Keith pulled off two great saves to keep us in the game.

Gerry Carthy and Dermot Reynolds who where our corner backs for the day, putting a good solid shift in with Nigel Drew also getting the better of his man. We where working the ball well up the filed with Kieran Lyons and Diarmaid Cadhain getting space to push on when they got the ball, Brian “Digger” was consistent as ever even though he picked up knock in training on Thursday. Big Damo and Tommy McGovern where in midfield and the partnership was working well with some slick moves which allowed us to move the ball into the forwards who took their scores when given the opportunity. Kieran “Rasher” Bacon was making his first appearance after becoming an internet sensation …..

We went in at half time drawing 0-4 each.

We made one change at half time with our team manager Paul Maher making his first appearance of the season replacing Rasher. The breeze had picked up and was against us in the second half, this allowed Garryowen to take a coupe of long range scores and open up a three point lead. A well worked ball up the field involving John Bradley, Dairmaid and Johnny Costello ended with Dave Moran who slotted the ball into the net to level the score.

We where on top and had a handful of chances to open up a lead but we hit six wide balls in a row. This was to be our downfall and Garryown upped their game and opened up a four point lead. Louie Doherty made way for John Timbs with 15 minutes to go. Sean Allen and Johnny Costello had another solid performance with them both getting on the score sheet. Super sub Connie Mc Carthy was introduced into the game late on to see if he could get the wonder goal we needed but this never materialised.

The game ended with a four point defeat 1-6 to 0-13, with 17 lads missing this shows how much the club has come on this season, with a quality panel it is important that all players attend training with competition for places been at a premium.
