Player interview with Eoin Coyne
Probably Peter O’Mahony, the man is an absolute animal and he’d do a job for ya in any position in the field. He’s the type of fella that a goalkeeper would love to have as a fullback
· Who was your toughest under-age opponent in back home?
Midleton and Sars were always breaking our hearts under-age, Cian McCarthy (son of Teddy Mc) from Sars was probably the best under-age player we came up against on a regular basis
· Who was your sporting idol growing up?
Sean Og O’Hailpin, a Cork legend and a dual star – what a hero. He gave us some days out in Croke Park and Thurles. He only moved to Cork when he was 12. His mother from Fiji and his father from Fermanagh, neither place seen as a GAA stronghold. His approach to the game brought Cork on to another level. It’s a shame his career ended in the way it did
· Do you possess any sentimental GAA items?
I’ve still have all of the match programmes from when Cork won the hurling All Ireland in 1999, it was my first year being at all of their championship games and it was my first time in Croke Park. I’ve also recently acquired a DVD of Youghal’s victorious County and Munster championship campaign from last year, I imagine that I’ll be rolling that out in 50 years time to show the grandkids
· Who is greatest ever sportsman in your opinion?
Well apart from Roy Keane, Sonia O’Sullivan, Rob Heffernan, Christy Ring and Ronan O’Gara, I’d probably say Usian Bolt, he’s just an absolute joy to watch.
· If you could play an All-Ireland final in any stadium outside of Ireland, where would you like to play it?
The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. When the roof is closed, the atmosphere there and around the city on game day is something else. To see Cork beat Dublin there would be pretty sweet
· What’s the best score you’ve ever gotten in your career?
We were playing an under 16 match against Cobh once and I was out around the “D”, the ball bobbled out towards me and I was eyeing it up to hit it on the volley. I could hear all the lads roaring at me to pick it up not hit it first time, but I caught it sweetly and it flew into the top corner. I dined out on that for about 6 months afterwards.
· Are there any sporting managers from other codes who you find inspirational?
Jose
· What’s the best sports book that you’ve ever read?
I’ve recently read both Donal Og Cusack and Oisin McConvilles’ books. Two great players in their day, both of whom have had their personal tribulations off the field. They’ve broken the mould in terms of player welfare and have probably done more for the GAA and its members than anyone else in the past decade or so.
· What is your favourite type of food?
That varies on my level of alcohol intake. Since moving to London, I’ve developed into quite the culinary apprentice and I’m after getting fond of making a good Risotto. I also like to frequent the many fine eateries of Blackstock Road and I can be quite partial to some Halal Fried Chicken in the small hours of a Sunday morning, at 25 pence a piece, you can’t go too far wrong
· What was the last live sporting event you attended?
I went to the NFL game at Wembley last Autumn. I didn’t have much of a clue of what was going on but the cheerleaders were great, incredible athletes.
