Player Interview with Eoin Conway

  • If you could take a sportsman from another sport and turn him into a footballer, who would you take?

Ronaldo is a machine, I’m sure you could make a handy full forward or centre forward out of him?

  • Who was your toughest under-age opponent in Donegal?

Never had the pleasure of playing underage in Donegal. Back home I’ve played against Mick Furlong and Conor Carty both on Wexford team and both excellent footballers. An opponent I have directly marked probably goes to Jack Kelly, I’ve marked him a  couple of times and I’m pretty sure he has ran more in those single games than I have in whole seasons. I’ve never played against Matthew O’Hanlon, played with him in school, but he would get my vote current captain of Wexford hurling team only for that would walk onto the Wexord football team.

  • Who was your sporting idol growing up?

In GAA terms the whole Wexford team that won all Ireland in 1996 even though I was only four a feat I may, sadly, never again see in my lifetime. Colm Cooper would also be up there. Outside of GAA I was a big fan of Tiger Woods.

  • Do you possess any sentimental GAA items?

I have the match programmes at home from the under 21 football county final, minor football and hurling county finals and Leinster under-16 schools final that I played in and thankfully all won.

  • Who is greatest ever sportsman in your opinion?

From my lifetime I would say Usain Bolt. His record is incredibly and his laid back attitude is so unique for professional athletes who are top of there discipline anywhere in the world, its incredible to see someone ease up in a 100m race and still win at a canter. The man is a phenom. Outside of my generation Ali would get the nod.

  • If you could play an All-Ireland final in any stadium outside of Ireland, where would you like to play it?

Be nice first of all to get to play an all Ireland final or second of all to get to play in Croker. Outside of Ireland White Hart Lane wouldn’t probably mean more to me than anywhere else (even though it is a bit of a hole). Maracana in Rio wouldn’t be bad either

  • What’s the best score you’ve ever gotten in your career?

The point I scored in minor football county final about four years ago. It was just before half time and I got the ball out close to the sideline about 35 yards out and there wasn’t a whole lot on when I looked up so I had a go with the outside of my right foot and luckily enough it sailed over.

  • Are there any sporting managers from other codes who you find inspirational?

What Guardiola has achieved in a couple of years in astounding but I would love to be in a Mourinho dressing room, a couple of big players who have played for Pep have spook negatively about him Mourinho doesn’t seem to have that with ex players. Jurgen Kloop seems like he would be a good lad to go on the beer with.

  • What’s the best sports book that you’ve ever read?

Not a huge sports book reader I used to read a lot of the autobiography’s my brother got when we were younger but I don’t remember particularly enjoying any of them. Bit of topic but rush is a great sport film that I have recently watched.

  • What is your favourite type of food?

Depends, if I’m sober it has to be lasagne and chips but if I’ve had a few, a taco chip would usually take my fancy.

  • What was the last live sporting event you attended?

Other than the match at the weekend? I was at Spurs against Cardiff about four weeks, Spurs won one nil, Soldado finally scored again.
