Player interview with Richie Graham
- If you could take a sportsman from another sport and turn him into a footballer, who would you take? The All-Black flanker Jerome Kaino. He would be a beast at centre back
- Who was your toughest under-age opponent back home? I’m not sure about toughest opponent. Certainly the best footballer I ever played with under-age was Peter McNulty who is sadly no longer with us. Under-age he was at a different level
- Who was your sporting idol growing up? No question. Cantona
- Do you possess any sentimental GAA items? Post match photo of the All-Ireland winning Laois minor team of 1997 which also featured yours truly. I managed to sneak out through the wire fencing in the old Hogan Stand with the assistance of Nicky English, who was sitting in the first row, and then side step a steward. I even did the lap of honour. In fairness I had put in a serious shift
- Who is greatest ever sportsman in your opinion? Michael Jordan. Although I’m sure some will argue this as he was so rubbish at baseball
- If you could play an All-Ireland final in any stadium outside of Ireland, where would you like to play it? Camp Nou
- What’s the best score you’ve ever gotten in your career? A point I scored in the first or second match of the tournament we attended in Amsterdam last year. Lovely flick down from the break, caught it and shot first time from about 40 yards into the wind. All while still over the legal limit to drive. I only wish it had been on a stage more fitting for a thing of such beauty.
- Are there any sporting managers from other codes who you find inspirational? This is going to be a controversial one with the ABU’s but you have got to recognise Alex Ferguson. Also Phil Jackson who created dynasties with both the Bulls and the Lakers
- What’s the best sports book that you’ve ever read? ‘What I think about when I think about running’ by Haruki Murakami. Some great observations on the internal struggles you go through when running long distance. Also really enjoyed Paidi O’Se’s first book. One great anecdote in particular about him booting his man up the arse during the national anthem! He was some bucko.
- What is your favourite type of food? Probably Thai. Although I’m also a fiend for Kebabs
- What was the last live sporting event you attended? Ireland v France in the last round of the 6 Nations in Paris a few weeks back. Unbelievable
