Club Notes 25th March 2014

March 25, 2014

We got our season off to a winning start without kicking a ball. Brigthon & Crawley Gaels gave us a walk over in the first round of the McArdle cup.

We play Moindearg in the second round of the McArdle cup on Saturday afternoon at 4pm in Greenford.

Training this week is on Tuesday at 7.45pm in Highgate Wood School and Thursday at 7:30pm at the Emirates Stadium.

New players welcome, contact John – 07833 016014 or [email protected]

We held a race day on Sunday evening in the Park Tavern, it was a great sucess and turnout. Thanks to Chris, Nigel, Brian, Steven and Johnny for organising the event.

Thanks to Denis in the Park Tavern for sponsoring the bags, we presented them to Denis during the race day.

Player interview with Sean O Carroll

– If you could take a sportsman from another sport and turn him into a footballer, who would you take?

I think it would be Sonny Bill Williams. Heavyweight boxer and World cup winning rugby centre. You would think he would be a tough opponent on the edge of the square.

– Who was your toughest under-age opponent in Donegal? (presume Kildare)

Definitely Andrew McLoughlin from Ellistown. He went on to play senior for Kildare and was the toughest man in the county to mark. Stuck to you like glue and knew how to throw the sly dig.

– Who was your sporting idol growing up?

Was then and still is Robbie Fowler. Even took him as my confirmation name!!!!!!

GAA wise it was Anthony Rainbow. A pure class act.

– Do you possess any sentimental GAA items?

My jersey from the 2009 Kildare Senior hurling final. Mostly because after all the semi finals we lost I thought I would never win one (and we weren’t supposed to keep em)!

– Who is greatest ever sportsman in your opinion?

Michael Jordan….in an era filled with amazing players who changed the sport he was still head and shoulders above the rest.

– If you could play an All-Ireland final in any stadium outside of Ireland, where would you like to play it?

Either the MCG in Melbourne or the Maracana in Rio. Huge crowd guaranteed and incredible cities for pints when you win.

– What’s the best score you’ve ever gotten in your career?

Sadly I need to go back to when I was 16. It was the League semi final replay against Moorefield in Allenwood. Curled a ball into the top corner from the 14.

I’m not sure if it was that good but it was my first ever floodlit game so it always feels more special thinking back.

– Are there any sporting managers from other codes who you find inspirational?

If he keeps going the way he is Brendan Rodgers will get the nod!!!!!

But what Joe Schmidt has managed with Leinster and Ireland in such a short space of time has been incredible. Shame is we will probably lose him to New Zealand some day.

– What’s the best sports book that you’ve ever read?

Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, A Dream by HG Bissinger

The film was rubbish but the book is amazing. It follows the high school football team of Permian High School, Odessa, Texas in 1988. The obsession in the town with the school team was nuts. I think the guy who wrote it was banned from the town afterwards. They thought he was going to write a glowing report about how amazing their team was but writes a book about wasting money, rascism and lack of interest in anybody who can’t play ball.

– What is your favourite type of food?

Pasta

– What was the last live sporting event you attended?

Ireland v Sweden in Lansdowne Road last year. Another rubbish game to wrap up a rubbish campaign.
