Well done to all the players that took part in the inter club game last Saturday. It was good to get out on the grass and get another game under our belt.

Player Interview with Steven Perry

•         If you could take a sportsman from another sport and turn him into a footballer, who would you take?

Dennis Rodman without a doubt. Big strong man on the edge of the square or I lar na pairce. Be a serious man to win breaking ball and could potentially set up a feeder club in Pyongyang too.

•         Who was your toughest under-age opponent in Donegal?

Barry Dunnion from Four Masters was pretty handy. Tenacious buck, who’d never give up & always attacked from half back – the hoor! Unlucky not to get an All-Star in 06, but got his All-Ireland in 2012. A great Gael off the pitch too.

•         Who was your sporting idol growing up?

Paul McGrath. Don’t know many pros who stop off in the offy on the way to training and win player of the year in the same season! Joking aside he was unbelievable in two World Cups for Ireland & gave it his all for the country.

•         Do you possess any sentimental GAA items?

A green gum shield until last Summer. I’m blaming its theft on those Arsenal coaches at Highgate.

•         Who is greatest ever sportsman in your opinion?

That’s a difficult one. In Gaelic Games Id go for Mickey Harte, he’s achieved and endured so much, yet carries himself with unbelievable dignity and humility. Not many Tyrone man you can say that about!

Maybe Mohammed Ali outside of our game. Revolutionised his sport and went to prison rather that than fight in an unjust war.

•         If you could play an All-Ireland final in any stadium outside of Ireland, where would you like to play it?

Maracana in Rio. A post game beach party on the Copa is just a wee bit more appealing than a very sweaty Big Tree!

•         What’s the best score you’ve ever gotten in your career?

Goal in a county final (albeit Intermediate Reserve!) at a crucial stage was a nice one.

•         Are there any sporting managers from other codes who you find inspirational?

I’d say Jock Stein was a good motivator back in the day. I wouldn’t say no to a pep talk from Guardiola if the opportunity arose.

•         What’s the best sports book that you’ve ever read?

Jim Stynes My Journey was a great read. & although Big Jim McGuinness wouldn’t thank me for saying it, I thought Declan Bogue’s This Is Our Year gave a great insight into the commitments given by county players & managers.

•         What is your favourite type of food?

After last Sunday, it’s hard to look beyond that mountainous carvery in The Quays…Also for some reason in the wee hours of Sunday morning I’d be partial to Fried Chicken!

•         What was the last live sporting event you attended?

Does pitch & putt at the weekend count? No…Well then the Gooners putting a few past Coventry in the cup last month. Although I was sitting beside some fella with a dodgy cockney accent!!
